Aloft Remodeling

At Aloft Remodeling, we are committed to celebrating and supporting the incredible work of LGBTQIA+ nonprofit organizations that make a tangible difference in our communities. As part of our Pride Month spotlight, we are thrilled to feature Dykes with Drills, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that is transforming lives one workshop at a time.

Who Are Dykes with Drills?

Founded in 2017 by professional carpenter and activist Tony Bravo, Dykes with Drills is a vibrant community of gay women, transgender, and non-binary individuals who are passionate about learning and teaching construction skills. The organization’s mission is to empower LGBTQIA+ individuals by providing them with the knowledge and tools to build, repair, and create with their own hands.

Building Skills and Confidence

Dykes with Drills offers a variety of hands-on workshops where participants can learn everything from basic carpentry to advanced woodworking techniques. These workshops are designed to be inclusive and accessible, providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals who may have felt excluded from traditional trades.

By teaching practical skills, Dykes with Drills not only helps participants build confidence but also opens up new career opportunities in the trades. The organization believes everyone should have the chance to learn these valuable skills, regardless of their background or gender identity.

Fostering Community and Connection

One of the most remarkable aspects of Dykes with Drills is the strong sense of community it fosters. Workshops are more than just learning experiences; they are spaces where individuals can connect, share stories, and support one another. This sense of belonging is essential for LGBTQIA+ individuals who may have faced discrimination or isolation in other areas of their lives.

Through their work, Dykes with Drills creates a network of support that extends beyond the workshops. Participants often form lasting friendships and professional connections, further strengthening the LGBTQIA+ community in San Francisco and beyond.

Making a Broader Impact

The impact of Dykes with Drills extends beyond individual empowerment. The organization collaborates with other nonprofits and community groups to address broader social issues. For instance, they have partnered with local homeless shelters to build furniture and make necessary repairs, benefiting marginalized populations.

Moreover, Dykes with Drills is committed to environmental sustainability. Many of their workshops use reclaimed and recycled materials, promoting eco-friendly construction practices. This commitment to sustainability benefits the environment and teaches participants the importance of resourcefulness and innovation.
